ProStorage Asks: Is a 1TB SD Card The Solution to Your Storage Problems?

A major manufacturer of SD cards and miniature storage recently released the first 1TB SD memory card. At ProStorage, we’re wondering what this means for the future of data archiving. Not only that but what does it mean for traditional storage when it comes to internal hard drives and external hard drives for desktops, laptops, tablets and smartphones?

Traditional Hard Drives

It’s becoming increasingly clear that the more traditional HDD hard drives are being replaced by solid state hard drives, but there are still some reasons not to abandon older drives. The biggest of those reasons is, at least for now, the price point. Although new technology inevitably gets cheaper as it becomes more common, HDD drives are still cheaper than their solid state replacements. They’re also capable of massive amounts of storage, while still maintaining a lower price point. ProStorage has previously explored why they’re great for archiving.

Solid State Hard Drives

Solid state hard drives are newer drives with no moving parts. This is the same technology as micro SD cards, and the fact that we’re now able to pack an enormous 1TB of data into a tiny drive means a lot for full-sized SSD drives going forward. SSD drives are far less susceptible to damage from wear and tear than HDD drives, as well as running at a lower temperature and making devices smaller. As storage space increases and prices go down, the ability to store masses of data on tiny devices will only get better.

Smartphones, Smartwatches and Portable Storage

Speaking of data on tiny devices – most of us now rely on smartphones for connectivity. How many of you are reading the ProStorage blog on a smartphone right now? Smartwatches, too, are now becoming far more commonplace. Fitting a terabyte of storage onto a single SD card has huge implications for the amount of data you’ll be able to store in your pocket and access instantly wherever you are.

More Space Might Make You Less Careful

The major drawback of a micro SD card holding so much data might not be so obvious at first. Everyone enjoys convenience, and everyone wants to be able to access their data instantly when they need to. But, like any hard drive, micro SD cards can be prone to becoming corrupted.

The team at ProStorage knows this is disastrous enough on a desktop, but having a broken SD card with 1TB’s worth of data and no easy way to access back-up when you’re on the go is potentially catastrophic. As an example – a professional photographer who relies on an SD card for storing high-quality images could lose a whole portfolio of work.

The limited data capacity of current SD cards keeps us in the habit of switching cards for different tasks, which usually means we stay in the habit of keeping them organized and keeping them safe. A single SD card for everything is great until it unexpectedly crashes.

ProStorage Solutions

Chances are if you’re reading this blog you frequently work with large amounts of data. Chances are, even better, that you backup this data vigilantly, just in case. While the tech is always getting better as it gets smaller, HDD drives in particular will always offer a cheap and easy way of archiving everything you need. ProStorage can offer a variety of solutions for storing your archived data safely and securely.
